What Makes Me an Artist?

I’ve taken some time to browse oracle Google to find out what defines fine art photography. There doesn’t seem to be one clear answer, much like any form of art, it is objective and differs according to the viewer’s perspective.

The Oracle’s Answer:

“Creative art, especially visual art whose products are to be appreciated primarily or solely for their imaginative, aesthetic, or intellectual content.”

I’m not sure I agree with that 100% (I rarely do though, I love a good debate). Using “art” and “solely” in the same sentence is already a problem for me… what is the purpose of art really? The answers are endless…

Personally, I find that art is difficult. Ask any artist. Yes, when you pull off a masterpiece it is super rewarding… but the journey there is often one that requires you to delve deeper than you would normally care to.

Art is found in many shapes and forms, but the one thing that good artists have in common is the ability to make people stop and think. In a world where we are bombarded with content and imagery, art requires of us to appeal emotionally. Denoting emotion is the tricky part… as it requires a certain sense of vulnerability… a willingness to share. Honesty… Authenticity.

Ok, I’m going to level with you. My head is a busy place. Messy, even. On any given day my brain cells have traffic jams, and often a few nasty accidents. But you know what? This is where creativity is born… in that messy array of mindless daydreams. I have finally gotten into the habit of putting ideas to paper, however silly they may seem. Of course, trying to interpret these ideas from behind my lens is rather daunting!!! (I promise you, every photographer has vision, but it takes years of skill and experience to find your style and interpret your voice… every time we pick up our camera we still get butterflies).

This year, I intend to share my voice through my imagery… and I look forward to sharing my journey with you…
